1) Examine the current issue

If they are still intact and not broken or cracked, wipe them down with a dry cloth to remove any dirt or debris so they will work more smoothly once they open again.         If there is damage to either sidetrack brackets, now is the time to replace them. Now you are ready to work on the torsion springs. The torsion spring can be found under each roller, they are metal rods that wind up like a screw but attach to an axle with brackets on either end of it – one left and one right.         Carefully lower both drums that contain these springs by using your hand or using pliers if they won’t budge easily. Once you have enough room between the drums and your garage door opener’s drive shaft (look straight down at the top of the track where there should be two attached bars) give them a firm yank outwards so they come loose of their brackets.

        If these springs do break, replace both of them at the same time to keep the door’s balance even. And if you are not replacing these springs because they still work well, make sure there is enough tension on them by turning the bolts that hold them in place (with your hand or with pliers) until it feels like they are tight enough. Reattach each spring drum back onto the track and reattach all panels securely before testing out your garage door repair.

                Once your issues seem to be resolved you can pull down on the top panel of your garage door to check how it is closing without any problems. If everything seems good, move on to step 3.

                 If there are a lot of new scrapes or the garage door still does not open up all the way, there may be further issues. If so, use a long metal bar to loosen up each torsion spring which will allow you to adjust them again. Be sure to adjust both of them equally so your garage door can remain balanced and closed without having an excess of pressure on anyone side.

                 Lastly, if it is still making noises or seems like something is loose that shouldn’t be (especially if the rollers are now broken) then there might also be additional hardware-related problems that require you to go out and buy new parts in order to fix these issues completely.
